Crown Lengthening for Cosmetic Periodontics

Crown lengthening is a safe and effective procedure that involves using a scalpel or laser to remove gum tissue in order to create a balanced ratio of gums to teeth. Crown lengthening can be performed for cosmetic reasons or when a tooth becomes decayed and is not able to be restored due to the lack of sufficient structure. By exposing more of the tooth, decay can be corrected and the tooth can adequately support a crown.

Crown lengthening for aesthetic purposes is commonly done to correct a “gummy smile”. Patients who have an excessive amount of gum tissue are said to have a gummy smile. A gummy smile does not necessarily indicate an underlying health issue, but individuals with a gummy smile commonly feel self-conscious about the imbalanced ratio between their gums and teeth. Crown lengthening is one of the most effective and safe methods for creating a more uniform appearance.

From regular periodontal maintenance to repairing, correcting, and preventing periodontal disease, including the placement of dental implants, we are proud to provide you with the highest quality dental care available in a comfortable environment. We are also committed to ensuring you know as much as possible about your oral health so you can make important, informed decisions regarding your oral health and treatment options. Procedure for Crown Lengthening

Prior to having crown lengthening performed, an initial consultation will be necessary to determine if this is the best option for your unique needs. If it is determined that crown lengthening is the optimal approach for you, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled. On the day of the procedure, we will answer any questions you have and make sure you are comfortable. Next, we will administer a local anesthetic (and dental sedation if necessary) to ensure that any pain or discomfort is minimized or eliminated.

Once you are sufficiently numbed, your gums are cut and pulled away from the teeth, which will reveal more of the tooth. If crown lengthening is being done to create sufficient structural support for a dental crown or filling, there will be additional steps performed following the removal of your gums to place the crown or filling. If the purpose of the procedure is strictly to improve the cosmetic appearance of a gummy smile, the surgical area will be cleaned, and the gums sutured, after which the procedure will be complete.

Aftercare Following Crown Lengthening

The recovery process following crown lengthening will typically take between one to two weeks. During this recovery period, it is common to experience some swelling and mild discomfort, but this can generally be managed using ice packs and over-the-counter pain relieving medication. If you are prescribed antibiotics, be certain to follow the recommended dose until your prescription runs out. It is also a good idea to abstain from alcohol and avoid eating foods that are hot or cold for the first few days following the procedure. It will also be necessary to schedule a follow-up appointment to have your stitches removed.

Once you have completed the healing process, you will not have to follow any special aftercare modifications; however, it is important that you take proactive steps to ensure that you will not require similar procedures in the future. In addition to brushing twice daily (minimum) and flossing on a regular basis, it is equally important to brush and floss properly. Every time you brush, do so for at least two minutes. Once you are done, clean your toothbrush. It is also important to replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if the bristles become irregular or flay.

Along with following good self-care, it is also important to schedule regular checkups with your periodontist at least every six months. These regular appointments allow us to conduct a professional cleaning that will remove plaque and tartar that cannot be removed using traditional methods, and also provide us with an opportunity to survey your current oral health and identity and address issues before they develop. If you follow these best practices, you will enjoy a bright, healthy smile for many years to come!

Cost of Crown Lengthening

The cost of crown lengthening will be determined by a variety of factors, including what (if any) type of dental sedation is used, the severity of your case, how many teeth need to be lengthened, and how much (if any) of the cost is covered by your dental insurance plan. It is important to be aware that if crown lengthening is being done for cosmetic purposes, it may not be covered by your provider. We are happy to help you file your claim and ensure that you maximize your insurance reimbursement, but any remaining balance will be your responsibility.

If you are not able to pay the full amount due at the time services are rendered, the following financial options may be available:

  • Care Credit: 0% interest for (maximum) three months (Our office pays a fee to keep this interest loan free for three months, provided the bill is paid on time)
  • 0% interest for pre-authorized debit/credit card for (maximum) four months (Agreement must be signed beforehand)
  • Most credit card companies provide interest-free credit for one year to new cardholders.

We accept cash, check, and all major credit cards.
